Bumpdate

A Bump Update

Many moons have passed since I gave you a glimpse into the secret life of Baby Flanagan. Let’s see if I can catch you up on all the haps since I last posted – which was when I was in WEEK 9 of my pregnancy.

Yikes.

That was like…. forever ago.

To be completely honest, not much transpired between WEEK 9 – WEEK 14.  I was nauseous & tired & hungry & miserable. I vaguely remember spending a stupid amount of money on an anti-nausea refill which basically just enabled me to get out of bed in the morning to bring Delia to school. Before returning home, I would make a mandatory pit stop to Chick-Fil-A where I’d fuel up on a frosted coffee, a chicken biscuit, & tater tots (this was the only form of nourishment my body would keep down).

The drive-thru employees knew me by name. They would slip me extra tots.

I missed softball games and dance practices. Dinner was probably take-out.

On that note…

Major shout-outs to the best husband & daughter I could ever ask for. They were total angel babies sent from above.

Sorry that I was out of commission for like 4 months, guys.

After all that icky ewyness, things started to get real awesome real quick. Sometime around WEEK 15- WEEK 16 is when the special stuff started to happen & I could feel the fluttering. Everything finally felt worth it.

15 WEEKS

At 18 WEEKS I had my first anatomy scan. Baby was big & beautiful. Everything looked perfect. The doctor did ask us to come back in a month so he could get a better look at baby’s heart. I believe this was due to the angle of the baby, he wasn’t able to get a good look.

The next few weeks were pretty uneventful.

Sciatica happened.

This was fun because we had a 2 week family road trip planned & sitting on my tushie for extended periods of time was really just what the doctor ordered.

Can you smell my sarcasm?

It really wasn’t THAT BAD but if you think I’d be willing to do it all over again, especially without my nest, you’re outta yer mind.

At 22 WEEKS I had my second anatomy scan. Baby weighed 1lb 3oz. So, like, huge. The heart was viewed in great detail – everything was perf. I saw baby’s little lips moving & I basically just melted into a puddle of joy & stayed that way for about a week.

22 WEEKS

As I sit here and write this post I am 24 WEEKS 4 DAYS. I can’t believe it’s been 2 weeks since I saw that sweet little face. So much has happened since then. It’s been one big blur. I’ve had heartburn for 3 days. Baby is getting so strong. John & Delia are able to see, feel, & experience all kinds of crazy kicks & flips with me.

It’s a very special time.

Crunch Time.

I’m over halfway there.

Sagittarius baby is due in 15 WEEKS & 3 DAYS.

That’s like, really soon.

That’s like, less than 4 MONTHS.

That’s like, scary.

My pregnancy app tells me that baby is the size of a cantaloupe.

My brain tells me we need new carpeting and to paint everything.

My body tells me I’m thirsty.

Back to School

I am so happy to say that our first day back to school went SWIMMINGLY!

I attribute this success to several things:

  1. Early Rising. I made sure to wake up in plenty of time to leisurely do all the things. I am often guilty of hitting the snooze button until our morning is forced to become an episode of Fear Factor where I’m performing dangerous maneuvers to race the clock – BUT NOT TODAY!
  2. We were prepared! Her clothes were pressed and all laid out the night before &  I did all of our Back to School shopping during the Tax Free Weekend which is ~one~ of my favorite weekends of the year. HA! Does that make me a total cheapskate?? Not even worried about it. I LOVE a deal 🙂
  3. Positive Attitudes. I am also guilty of allowing myself to succumb to negative thinking and anxiety. However, Delia is a freakishly happy unicorn child and I still have no idea where she actually is from – if she was accidentally switched at birth I don’t even wanna know. I’m keeping her.
  4. With that being said, I actually had a hormonal breakdown in the office of the school the day prior and ended up making a few new friends. Maybe this didn’t actually help and they aren’t really my new friends but at the end of the whole ordeal I felt a little better and more in love with our school.
  5. Delia has great new teacher and there were many familiar faces in her class! She felt welcomed and comfortable right away – giving her teacher cookies probably didn’t hurt either… But I think we just got lucky!

I will say, due to no fault of our own, the afternoon pick up situation was utter chaos. I wasn’t able to get Delia into my car until almost 30 min. after the school bell rang & I arrived 30 min. early! In defense of the school, I think the rain and newness of the year played a major factor. It was fine – but then we really had to rush to dance right after. Thank goodness Delia wasn’t assigned any homework – I think that would have resulted in another hormonal breakdown!

I’ve been getting some questions about our clothes, lunch box, backpack, etc. and wanted to share that most of Delia’s things were purchased at Target during the aforementioned Tax Free Weekend sale. However, there are some things available on Amazon that I would like to share with you! Some things are student related and some are mom related. All are things we have and love. Like I mentioned in my last post, I am an Amazon Affiliate and will receive a small commission from qualifying purchases through my links. But rest assured I would never share with you anything just because. I find these things useful in my daily life and maybe you will as well! And that’s really the most fun part I think 🙂

Most of Delia’s school uniform items I buy are from The Children’s Place or Target. I find that The Children’s Place offers a better selection in Polo colors which is important for Delia because she very much dislikes having to wear a uniform. (Like I said before… unicorn child) And having a purple or teal or pink polo offers her a small sense of individuality amongst the sea of typical navy, black, and white polos. Target, however, is better for shorts and skirts. The material offered in their Jack & Cat line is soft and comfortable which is really important for little ones. However, I sometimes will go on Zulily for more cutesy items (I’m a big fan of peter pan collars) like jumpers and dresses. And I just discovered that one of my favorite brands from Zulily is also available on Amazon! It’s called French Toast – their clothes are both super cute and affordable. #winning

Here are some of our favorite pieces from French Toast:

French Toast Girls School Uniforms V-Neck Pleated Jumper 3T Navy       French Toast Toddler S/S Peter Pan Fitted Shirt - Blue, 2t

This adorable pleated jumper and button down are the perfect combo for a cute outfit. They both come in a variety of colors and they even have a long sleeve version of this shirt!

This dress is another great option – it’s a 1piece & has the cute collar that I love!

Okay – these next items aren’t exactly the same as what we have from Target but are very similar. As an Aquarius (yes, I believe in astrology, too – don’t @ me) I get very bored with routine and doing the same thing over and over. By the end of last year, packing Delia’s lunch box was the most intolerable chore – I felt so uninspired and found myself giving her the same things over and over and over. I can only make so many PB&J’s until I lose my damn mind. Then I stumbled across Jenny Mollen’s instagram account that she dedicates solely to the lunches she packs for her “dictator” son. It’s the cutest/ funniest thing ever and drove me to purchase a bento box for Delia. If you’re not following that or her main account you totally should. She’s one of my absolute faves.

Bento Box for Kids, Leakproof Lunch Box with 3 Compartments, Lunch container safe for kids (Purple) By MissBig

This box is most similar to what we have & there’s actually a 10% off coupon right now!

Lunch Box Set of 2 Leakproof Lunch Containers, Pink Blue, 3-4 Insulated Compartments, Lightweight Bento Lunch Boxes for Kids Adults Athletes, Fit for Meal Prep, Snacks, Portion Control | by Zimmi

This is a 2 pack & I absolutely love the colors! Delia’s favorite color is blue (in case you were curious) and she would just die. *~the little things~*

Okay – so I was that mom that bought every single item (and then some… for brownie points)  on the recommended classroom supply list. So yesterday, to ease the burden of carrying an enormous & heavy bag across the school campus, I was a genius and used one of these bad boys:

A collapsible dolly. If you don’t have one you need one. This thing comes in handy more than you know and since I’ve been pregnant and trying to do all the things I’m needing it now more than ever.

Okay the last thing I’m going to share with you is something I personally used and loved the last 2 years and I don’t have one for this year because I was being an unorganized bum and by the time I remembered I needed a new one the price was all jacked up on Amazon & I couldn’t find it anywhere else! UHHH!! Do yourself a favor and get this while it’s still only $6. It’s the cutest pocket planner ever. Now – I have a regular planner that  I use and love too but this one is the size of a checkbook and is perfect for your purse or to have at work. I love the at a glance month set up and I use it to put all of Delia’s important school dates in at the beginning of the year. So handy when making follow up doctor’s appointments or when you need to know about a date really quick and you’re a caveman like me and don’t update everything on your phone/google calendar!

Susan Branch’s designs are so cute and make me so happy!  Andddddd it’s a 2 year pocket planner ! It’s my lazy girl secret to staying on top of my ish. Thank me later.

Okay – that’s all I have for you today. I’m about to turn on some crude rap music and pull a power hour to try and clean my house before I have to pick Delia up from school!

But can we acknowledge real quick how I turned out 2 posts in 2 days???? WHO AM I!?

Leave some love in the comments or like this post so I know we’re becoming besties 🙂 Thanks!

Hope you guys have a great day!
xoxo Brittany ❤

  2. V. Practical Steam Mop ~ I’ve been wanting one of these for MONTHS! Our entire down stairs is tile and the before & after pics of what this puppy can do for grout had me SOLD! Can’t wait for so-squeaky-clean-you-can-eat-off-em *GERM FREE* floors!
  3. The BEST Blender Ever ~ Santa brought me this for X-Mas and it’s seriously life changing! Best frozen margs EVER! But since I’m on hooch hiatus for the next few months I g u e s s it’s also pretty good for smoothies, salad dressings, soups, salsas, even nut butters & homemade almond milk!
  4. The Cutest Birks I’ve Ever Seen ~ I love my Birks! They are seriously the comfiest most versatile sandals ever. I have a pair in black which have kind of evolved into my “beach birks” over the years. I’m thinking a fresh shiny new pair is needed for target runs & Sunday brunch!
  5. Blue Light Blocking Glasses ~ Perfect for any mama who spends most of her day working on a computer or staring @ her smart phone! I thought this pair was super cute but they have tons of different styles!
  6. This Fancy Schmancy Coffee Machine (on MAJOR sale) ~ I have heard SO MANY PEOPLE rave about their Nespresso’s! Unfortunately – I’m trying to keep my caffeine intake on the low low these days but I’m v curious and intrigued by this beauty (especially in the matte black 😍) && This is the best deal I’ve seen so far!
  7. Fun Reusable Straws ~ These are always good to have on hand – especially for all those frozen margs & smoothies you’ll be making! I love the silicone variety because ~ c o l o r s ~ but also – I’m like all for this plastic straw ban and saving turtles and whatever but it is IMPOSSIBLE to enjoy a delicious Chick-fil-A milk shake with a soggy paper straw. So, really, you kinda need these.

  8. The Amazon Echo Dot Smart Speaker ~ This thing is like the lazy homemakers’ best friend. It’s cute, compact, smart, & super practical. Just maybe watch what you say around it – because like government interference and stuff 😉
  9. Comfy New Pair of Sneaks ~ Of all the things on this list THESE are what I really want! They are the perfect everyday pair of white sneakers! I meannnn how cute and comfy do these look!?!?! Plus – I’m pregnant, and I heard wearing sneakers helps prevent your feet from swelling! I’d happily trade in my slides for these guys!
  10. A Facial Cleansing Spin Brush She Didn’t Know She NEEDED ~ I’ve been using this brush for years and it’s S H O C K I NG what happens when you use it with your favorite facial cleanser AFTER you remove your makeup! Honestly, so satisfyingly disgusting to see how much residue is removed from your face after you could have sworn it’s clean! This one has 3 different heads for whatever level of exfoliation you prefer & a smart travel case.

Before I wrap this up – does anyone want to talk about last nights episode of GoT !? I personally thought it was the best episode of the season so far! Don’t h8 me but I thought the Battle of Winterfell was literally the most frustrating thing to watch ever & was kinda raging about whatever the hell those dragons were even doing. Like ummm HELLO you have 1 JOB!! 🔥💀🔥 I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it but Jon’s speech in the first 5 min. had me U G L Y C R Y I N G  & likeeeee THE END – OMG. Such a sad but (kinda) necessary loss to boost momentum for The Last War! Let me know your thoughts in the comments! This is a safe space.

True Life: My Kid Won’t Eat (and it’s driving me crazy)

Okay, so this title may be a bit misleading. And to be completely fair, there are plenty of perfectly healthy foods that my daughter willingly ingests on a regular basis. She is a happy, healthy, active child. We are not by any means, in a situation which there are any actual causes for concern. Unless you’d like to hear more about my post-dinner wine intake.

Delia has been a valiant (and I hate the term) “picky eater” for the last 5 years, people. I’m all too familiar with the art of modifying to appease the supper time struggle. But, the truth is, my wounds are still fresh from last night’s defeat and I wanna talk about it.

I  N E E D  T O  V E N T.

Story Time:

Picture it*~

It’s Monday afternoon and I just finished a long day at the office. (We all know that Monday’s are the worst, but THIS Monday was especially brutal because I was out-of-town the previous Thursday & Friday and had a ton of catching up to do.) After picking Delia up from dance and doing a light errand, we made our way home for our usual weekday song and dance.

As dinner time was quickly approaching, I opted for the easy way out. Burgers. Safe, simple, crowd-pleasing burgers. We always keep such conveniences in the freezer for nights such as these. However, to my dismay, upon reaching for the frozen miracle patties, I discovered that we were completely out of the beef variety. AKA the only burger option that (up until this point) I’d ever been brave enough to introduce to Delia.

Now, what I did have, were veggie burgers. I personally love veggie burgers, and maybe it was mom brain, or maybe it was my own selfish desire to just hurry up so I could sit down to eat, but this little voice in the back of my head was telling me                                              just go with it

Side Note: In my defense, this little stunt to try to play off the veggie burger as a typical greasy meat burger was totally backed by supporting evidence and knowledge of foods that Delia doesn’t have any qualms with. Please see listed below.

Delia Approved Vegetables:

  • Carrots (raw)
  • Broccoli (cooked)
  • Peas
  • Corn
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Spinach (raw)
  • Green Beans

So, you see? I mean really, what even is a veggie burger if not just half of those ingredients all mushed up together?

I digress. Delia is served a plain burger with cheese on a sesame bun. Just the way she likes it. I will admit, that out of fear, I did not cut this in half, as I normally would. She looks. She smells. She pokes and prods, just as she would to even the most familiar of foods. She must examine every last millimeter of what she is about to consume. This trait of hers makes me proud of how observant and cautious she is, but, in this particular situation, IRRITATED AF.

eat the food(me during literally every meal, every day)

Anyways, she obviously noticed.

She noticed right away. She noticed right away and looked up at me with these eyes. These eyes that were filled with this little tiny-girl version of betrayal. These eyes that burned right through my tired, hungry, soul.

My last option (and lets be real this is the only option because at this point I’m just so over it) was to coax her into trying a bite with the hopes she might just actually like it. I tried to remind her of the love she has for all of the vegetables that were inside the patty. I told her it was delicious. I took a huge bite out of my own burger (because I was friggin starving && *OVER IT*) to show her that it was safe and enjoyable. She then choked up nerve to taste the burger on the promise that she would in fact like it. And also because at this point we are all hangry and just want to finish this charade so we can watch JeopARDY LIKE THE NORMAL FUN LOVING FAMILY THAT WE ARE.

And you guys. This. This is what I get.

squidward

At this point, I’m out of patience, out of memes, out of time before jeopardy starts.

She spat, griped, moaned, whined, and carried on. And it was done. Stalemate.

I sent her to bed without dinner. Okay, I let her eat the other stuff on her plate but I mean how much sustenance does a small portion of plain (because picky) romaine & corn actually provide?

I felt horrible. She felt horrible. We all felt horrible.

In the end, after I finished my nightly routine, I woke her up at 11pm with regret filled hugs and kisses. I let her eat a bowl of Lucky Charms. I let her spend the remainder of the night in my bed. We curled up together and read a few chapters of her current fave -Nancy Drew, and all was right with the world.

  • Sometimes dinners suck.
  • Sometimes I make poor  parenting decisions.
  • Sometimes we eat sugar filled cereal at midnight.

Such is #momlife.

img_6585Summer Reading in All It’s Glory

I know we all –know– but can we just take a moment to acknowledge the fact that we are over half way through the summer – and the year.

Yeesh.

This is our second summer in South Florida and I’m just gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s by far the hottest/most humid summer in the history of forever. Only kidding, but seriously – it’s p r e t t y ew out here. Delia is participating in a tennis camp this summer and is outside A LOT.  With that being said, during the weekends we try to stay cool with indoor activities and trips to the beach (but only while the ocean temp is still semi refreshing – next month it will feel like a friggin jacuzzi).

Lot’s of summer reading is going on –as pictured above– and I couldn’t be more proud. I love seeing Delia with her nose stuck in a book. I find it truly amazing how early children are learning to read nowadays. When we first moved to Florida I learned about VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) and I enrolled Delia immediately. She attended a KinderCare Learning Center and I wholeheartedly believe that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It gave her such a solid educational foundation for going into Kindergarten and I am truly grateful for all the wonderful staff and teachers there. During the school year we would read (still do) a short fun story/picture book before bed and only occasionally a chapter book here or there. But now that summer is here I’m taking FULL advantage of my Barnes & Noble membership (especially the Kids’ Club – seriously you guys, if you aren’t signed up you need to be – you get like 10% off all children’s books plus a lot of other sweet benefits) and almost weekly, we take a trip for a new handful of books for her to sink her teeth into.

Delia’s Current Must Reads:

img_6589

Of the books on Delia’s list of favorites – Big Nate is by far her most favorite. It has a cute comic book type feel that satisfies her need for fun drawings and plus it’s pretty darn funny. We usually take our time skimming through the chapter book series that are targeted for children 6-8 yo. Any  one that Delia thinks she may be interested in, we’ll buy the 1st book of that series. If she likes it -YAY- next time we go to the book store we’ll get the next in the series, if not -oh well- “what else do they have that you might like?” We also like to pick up at least one book that’s a little more advanced to challenge her. It’s such a huge feeling of accomplishment for her when she finishes “a book for a third grader!”

What else…

John and I had our first date night of the summer! Crazy, right? To say it was long overdue is an understatement. This past weekend we went to Cirque Du Soleil Ovo. It was awesome. I was so engrossed during the show that I didn’t even take any pictures. And truthfully, I was so hungry afterwards I didn’t snap any pictures of our dinner date. But, selfishly enough, I managed to capture (1) image of myself with makeup on for like the first time in m o n t h s which is the only physical evidence I have that we even did go on a date.

img_6584-1

SIDE NOTE: This weekend I totally relapsed on dairy. Did you know that basically everything that is delicious has dairy in it? At least everything that is delicious at the Cheesecake Factory does. Did you know even my Caramel Macchiato w/ almond milk has dairy in it? I didn’t – until yesterday.

FUN FACT: Starbucks Caramel Drizzle has dairy in it. *sigh*

Have you been reading anything interesting this summer? What books do you and your children enjoy? Where did you go on your last date night? Do you have a dairy sensitivity? How do you cope with it?  I’d love to hear from you guys! 🙂
