Back to School

I am so happy to say that our first day back to school went SWIMMINGLY!

I attribute this success to several things:

  1. Early Rising. I made sure to wake up in plenty of time to leisurely do all the things. I am often guilty of hitting the snooze button until our morning is forced to become an episode of Fear Factor where I’m performing dangerous maneuvers to race the clock – BUT NOT TODAY!
  2. We were prepared! Her clothes were pressed and all laid out the night before &  I did all of our Back to School shopping during the Tax Free Weekend which is ~one~ of my favorite weekends of the year. HA! Does that make me a total cheapskate?? Not even worried about it. I LOVE a deal 🙂
  3. Positive Attitudes. I am also guilty of allowing myself to succumb to negative thinking and anxiety. However, Delia is a freakishly happy unicorn child and I still have no idea where she actually is from – if she was accidentally switched at birth I don’t even wanna know. I’m keeping her.
  4. With that being said, I actually had a hormonal breakdown in the office of the school the day prior and ended up making a few new friends. Maybe this didn’t actually help and they aren’t really my new friends but at the end of the whole ordeal I felt a little better and more in love with our school.
  5. Delia has great new teacher and there were many familiar faces in her class! She felt welcomed and comfortable right away – giving her teacher cookies probably didn’t hurt either… But I think we just got lucky!

I will say, due to no fault of our own, the afternoon pick up situation was utter chaos. I wasn’t able to get Delia into my car until almost 30 min. after the school bell rang & I arrived 30 min. early! In defense of the school, I think the rain and newness of the year played a major factor. It was fine – but then we really had to rush to dance right after. Thank goodness Delia wasn’t assigned any homework – I think that would have resulted in another hormonal breakdown!

I’ve been getting some questions about our clothes, lunch box, backpack, etc. and wanted to share that most of Delia’s things were purchased at Target during the aforementioned Tax Free Weekend sale. However, there are some things available on Amazon that I would like to share with you! Some things are student related and some are mom related. All are things we have and love. Like I mentioned in my last post, I am an Amazon Affiliate and will receive a small commission from qualifying purchases through my links. But rest assured I would never share with you anything just because. I find these things useful in my daily life and maybe you will as well! And that’s really the most fun part I think 🙂

Most of Delia’s school uniform items I buy are from The Children’s Place or Target. I find that The Children’s Place offers a better selection in Polo colors which is important for Delia because she very much dislikes having to wear a uniform. (Like I said before… unicorn child) And having a purple or teal or pink polo offers her a small sense of individuality amongst the sea of typical navy, black, and white polos. Target, however, is better for shorts and skirts. The material offered in their Jack & Cat line is soft and comfortable which is really important for little ones. However, I sometimes will go on Zulily for more cutesy items (I’m a big fan of peter pan collars) like jumpers and dresses. And I just discovered that one of my favorite brands from Zulily is also available on Amazon! It’s called French Toast – their clothes are both super cute and affordable. #winning

Here are some of our favorite pieces from French Toast:

French Toast Girls School Uniforms V-Neck Pleated Jumper 3T Navy       French Toast Toddler S/S Peter Pan Fitted Shirt - Blue, 2t

This adorable pleated jumper and button down are the perfect combo for a cute outfit. They both come in a variety of colors and they even have a long sleeve version of this shirt!

This dress is another great option – it’s a 1piece & has the cute collar that I love!

Okay – these next items aren’t exactly the same as what we have from Target but are very similar. As an Aquarius (yes, I believe in astrology, too – don’t @ me) I get very bored with routine and doing the same thing over and over. By the end of last year, packing Delia’s lunch box was the most intolerable chore – I felt so uninspired and found myself giving her the same things over and over and over. I can only make so many PB&J’s until I lose my damn mind. Then I stumbled across Jenny Mollen’s instagram account that she dedicates solely to the lunches she packs for her “dictator” son. It’s the cutest/ funniest thing ever and drove me to purchase a bento box for Delia. If you’re not following that or her main account you totally should. She’s one of my absolute faves.

Bento Box for Kids, Leakproof Lunch Box with 3 Compartments, Lunch container safe for kids (Purple) By MissBig

This box is most similar to what we have & there’s actually a 10% off coupon right now!

Lunch Box Set of 2 Leakproof Lunch Containers, Pink Blue, 3-4 Insulated Compartments, Lightweight Bento Lunch Boxes for Kids Adults Athletes, Fit for Meal Prep, Snacks, Portion Control | by Zimmi

This is a 2 pack & I absolutely love the colors! Delia’s favorite color is blue (in case you were curious) and she would just die. *~the little things~*

Okay – so I was that mom that bought every single item (and then some… for brownie points)  on the recommended classroom supply list. So yesterday, to ease the burden of carrying an enormous & heavy bag across the school campus, I was a genius and used one of these bad boys:

A collapsible dolly. If you don’t have one you need one. This thing comes in handy more than you know and since I’ve been pregnant and trying to do all the things I’m needing it now more than ever.

Okay the last thing I’m going to share with you is something I personally used and loved the last 2 years and I don’t have one for this year because I was being an unorganized bum and by the time I remembered I needed a new one the price was all jacked up on Amazon & I couldn’t find it anywhere else! UHHH!! Do yourself a favor and get this while it’s still only $6. It’s the cutest pocket planner ever. Now – I have a regular planner that  I use and love too but this one is the size of a checkbook and is perfect for your purse or to have at work. I love the at a glance month set up and I use it to put all of Delia’s important school dates in at the beginning of the year. So handy when making follow up doctor’s appointments or when you need to know about a date really quick and you’re a caveman like me and don’t update everything on your phone/google calendar!

Susan Branch’s designs are so cute and make me so happy!  Andddddd it’s a 2 year pocket planner ! It’s my lazy girl secret to staying on top of my ish. Thank me later.

Okay – that’s all I have for you today. I’m about to turn on some crude rap music and pull a power hour to try and clean my house before I have to pick Delia up from school!

But can we acknowledge real quick how I turned out 2 posts in 2 days???? WHO AM I!?

Leave some love in the comments or like this post so I know we’re becoming besties 🙂 Thanks!

Hope you guys have a great day!
xoxo Brittany ❤

w/ Blue Satin Sashes – a favorites post –

It’s done, guys.

This summer came, saw, and conquered. It carped it’s diem. It’s so friggin’ over it. It literally just can’t even anymore.

Samesies though.

I’m equal parts an emotional wreck that D will be a 1st Grader / ecstatic that I’m done shoveling out heaps of money for camp. (if we’re being real about it)

What Else? Here’s a few other things I’m in like with right now….

Listening: Spotify Current Must Hears – Deep Focus, Productive Morning, Flash Back Friday.. These (3) playlists are my go to for the time being. Give me all the zen & good memories, please. #haloonrepeat

Watching: Nobody Speak: Trials of the Free Press – it started as kind of a joke between John & I because he, as a kid, was obsessed w/ WWE and I thought (incessently joked and persisted) that he would LOVE it because, I mean, Hulk Hogan & his infamous sex scandal. But – to both of our surprise – it was really good. I love documentaries, and this one was definitely eyeopening, to say the least. Highly recommend.

Reading: So I recently began reading The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. I first saw previews for the series advertised by Hulu, but as a mom on a budget – Netflix is enough for me. I decided to read the novel instead. Atwood has so far presented a grim reality for our protagonist, Offred, who frequently has flashbacks of better days. I haven’t made it very far, but I can’t wait to see what unfolds next.

Drinking: On a recent trip to Costco, John and I decided to pop into the Liquor Store and we were N O T disappointed. $28.99 for a handle of Tito’s!? Yes, please. This means that for the past (3) weekends we’ve been getting ourselves toasty for $10 eaches! Vodka Soda on the Rocks with a Splash of Cran, anyone?

Pampering: I think we’re all kind of reaching our boiling point (literally) here. It always get worse before it gets better, guys.  August in South Florida is just a sneak preview into what I can only imagine as an accurate depiction of the deepest depths of hell. I leave my house @ 7:30am and basically melt instantly upon outdoor exposure. Luckily, my bestie for the restie, Lauren, is a Posh representative and hooks me up with all my summertime essentials. Current must have:

This is my go-to soap rn. Cooling/ and slightly exfoliating – it’s the perfect way to treat yoself after a long hot day. & Heads up plant based friends  – it’s vegan! Besides this summertime miracle soap, Posh offers a wide range of pampering products with adorable packaging – cutesie names – and delicious scents! Also obsessed with their Snarky Bar & Big Fat Yummy Hand Cremes.

Loving: These two. Always.

What’re some things you’re in like with right now? Whether it’s food, a comfy pair of pj’s or a song that’s just hittingggg the spot, I’d love to hear about it 🙂

Thanks for reading!

I know we all –know– but can we just take a moment to acknowledge the fact that we are over half way through the summer – and the year.

Yeesh.

This is our second summer in South Florida and I’m just gonna go out on a limb here and say it’s by far the hottest/most humid summer in the history of forever. Only kidding, but seriously – it’s p r e t t y ew out here. Delia is participating in a tennis camp this summer and is outside A LOT.  With that being said, during the weekends we try to stay cool with indoor activities and trips to the beach (but only while the ocean temp is still semi refreshing – next month it will feel like a friggin jacuzzi).

Lot’s of summer reading is going on –as pictured above– and I couldn’t be more proud. I love seeing Delia with her nose stuck in a book. I find it truly amazing how early children are learning to read nowadays. When we first moved to Florida I learned about VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten) and I enrolled Delia immediately. She attended a KinderCare Learning Center and I wholeheartedly believe that was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It gave her such a solid educational foundation for going into Kindergarten and I am truly grateful for all the wonderful staff and teachers there. During the school year we would read (still do) a short fun story/picture book before bed and only occasionally a chapter book here or there. But now that summer is here I’m taking FULL advantage of my Barnes & Noble membership (especially the Kids’ Club – seriously you guys, if you aren’t signed up you need to be – you get like 10% off all children’s books plus a lot of other sweet benefits) and almost weekly, we take a trip for a new handful of books for her to sink her teeth into.

Delia’s Current Must Reads:

img_6589

Of the books on Delia’s list of favorites – Big Nate is by far her most favorite. It has a cute comic book type feel that satisfies her need for fun drawings and plus it’s pretty darn funny. We usually take our time skimming through the chapter book series that are targeted for children 6-8 yo. Any  one that Delia thinks she may be interested in, we’ll buy the 1st book of that series. If she likes it -YAY- next time we go to the book store we’ll get the next in the series, if not -oh well- “what else do they have that you might like?” We also like to pick up at least one book that’s a little more advanced to challenge her. It’s such a huge feeling of accomplishment for her when she finishes “a book for a third grader!”

What else…

John and I had our first date night of the summer! Crazy, right? To say it was long overdue is an understatement. This past weekend we went to Cirque Du Soleil Ovo. It was awesome. I was so engrossed during the show that I didn’t even take any pictures. And truthfully, I was so hungry afterwards I didn’t snap any pictures of our dinner date. But, selfishly enough, I managed to capture (1) image of myself with makeup on for like the first time in m o n t h s which is the only physical evidence I have that we even did go on a date.

SIDE NOTE: This weekend I totally relapsed on dairy. Did you know that basically everything that is delicious has dairy in it? At least everything that is delicious at the Cheesecake Factory does. Did you know even my Caramel Macchiato w/ almond milk has dairy in it? I didn’t – until yesterday.

FUN FACT: Starbucks Caramel Drizzle has dairy in it. *sigh*

Have you been reading anything interesting this summer? What books do you and your children enjoy? Where did you go on your last date night? Do you have a dairy sensitivity? How do you cope with it?  I’d love to hear from you guys! 🙂
